Bettering the lives of Ostomates through technology and innovation.

- Overview -

OstomyTech is a student-based startup focused on improving ostomate life through an innovative ostomy management system. OstomyTech’s first innovation is the Individualized Wafer Cutting System (IWCS) which includes:

the OstomyTech mobile application,

OstomyTech-approved Scanner,

and OstomyTech Personalize Wafer Cutting Service.

This system is designed to empower the patient for managing their own stoma with remote medical supervision and care.

THE PROBLEM

Over one million Americans require an ostomy procedure, where a stoma is formed on the abdominal intestine. This population includes individuals with Colon or Rectal cancer, Crohn’s Disease, abdominal trauma, or urinary tract diseases and disorders.

Stomas, which allow for bodily waste to exist into a waste bag, need to be maintained. To connect a waste bag to the stoma, an ostomy wafer is required to fit the stoma. Standard wafers are often incompatible with the patient’s stoma. The ostomate requires a nonstandard wafer to fit their stoma’s unique location, size, diameter, circumference, and shape. Ostomates supplied with standard wafers must use scissors to cut the wafer’s edges until an adequate fit is achieved. This can often cause the stoma to bleed from the wafer’s rigid edges, leading to pain and general discomfort for the patient. Many ostomates experience frequent complications and significant blood loss due to skin irritants and dermatitis. Because of these problems, expensive and time-consuming hospital visits become far too frequent.

OUR SOLUTION

OstomyTech will develop the Individual Wafer Cutting System (IWCS) to maximize comfort and precision of the wafer fit. The IWCS includes the OstomyTech Mobile App, a scanner approved by OstomyTech, and the Personalized Wafer Cutting Service itself.

The patient attaches a scanner to a smartphone or tablet and accesses it through the OstomyTech App. Together, the mobile app and scanner take a 3D rendered image of the stoma. From the app, patients can order wafers based on their 3D rendered model. OstomyTech will then laser-cut wafers to match the patient’s stoma. Not only will laser-cutting remove the general inconvenience of at-home wafer fitting, it will reduce the possibility of rough wafer edges that can result in cut blood vessels and profuse bleeding. Additionally, the 3D rendered data is saved for both the patient and doctors to review, monitoring improvements and/or regressions from all the scans collected.
